Healing Through Yoga

Experience & Education

I have been studying and practicing yoga for the past 10 years. In 2019, I completed Yoga Teacher Training (certified by Yoga Alliance) at a traditional Hindu ashram in the heart of Bali. My training focused on physical poses, energy work, and yoga philosophy. I am a self-trained coach, utilizing my own experience in helping myself manage chronic anxiety and fibromyalgia to offer light on the paths of others seeking to improve their self-care routines.

My Story

Yoga was instrumental in my journey to health. Like many who practice yoga in the U.S., I started because my doctor had recommended it as a gentle form of exercise. At the time, I was very sick with fibromyalgia symptoms, depression, and general anxiety. Past back and knee injuries from military service kept me from more traditional forms of exercise. I was in pain and out of shape. I wasn't very motivated, but I knew something had to change. I started attending a yoga class at a nearby gym that was focused on gentle stretching, which was perfect for where I was at. I distinctly remember feeling so relieved that I cried at the end of the first few classes. I was in less pain and came out of the class feeling both calm and energized. This was a catalyst in my journey back to health. I knew I wasn't destined to live my life from bed any longer, so over the next five years, I spent thousands of hours on my personal research project: healing myself from fibromyalgia, anxiety, and depression.  Like all journeys, my path didn’t follow a straight line, but I can confidently say that I am happier, more at peace, and more pain-free than I have ever been. I have energy to tackle my goals and know what tools to use whenever I have a flare-up to get better ASAP. My passion project is now helping others using what I've learned..

My Philosophy

During our sessions, we’ll focus on your needs, so that you can get the most out of our time together. My classes are not “one size fits all”, and will differ week to week, depending on how you're feeling and where you want to be. No matter what we focus on, you can count on at least 40 minutes of mindful movement through customized yoga. Additionally, each class includes yogic philosophy from teachers like Patanjali, BKS Iyengar,  Paramahansa Yogananda, and Yogi Bhajan because movement and meditation without context of where it came from and why we're doing it is simply whitewashing.

I understand how hard it is to think about moving when you’re feeling down or in pain.  Maintaining regularity is important for both mental and physical well-being, so I believe in modifying a session to adapt to where you’re at on any given day. On the flipside, I think it’s important to de-condition ourselves from the mentality of “just put your head down and get through it”. It’s better to find a way to honor where your body is at while also maintaining regularity. Of course, I completely understand that life or illness gets in the way sometimes and don’t mind rescheduling!
